Our lives are filled with cast metal products. Casting is the process by which solid metal shapes (castings) are produced by filling voids in moulds with liquid metal. The basic steps involved in making castings are patternmaking, moulding, melting and pouring, shakeout and cleaning, heat treating, and inspection The quality and accuracy of casting depends upon the pattern making. The pattern may be made of wood, metal.
Wooden patterns are also named wooden moulds; the wooden patterns should be made by skilled workers and will be used for the sand casting process.
The metal patterns are usually made of iron and aluminium. The advantages of the metal patterns are good surface quality, very long lifetimes, good strength and many others. The disadvantages are long delivery time, high cost, and cannot make very large castings. The metal foundries usually use wooden patterns to make samples.
